“My crown is called content,
a crown that seldom kings enjoy”

William Shakespare

Artist Statement

My artwork specifically expresses the love that I have for God and the lessons that I have been taught as a Christian.  My Christian walk has not been easy but it has been faithful. The artwork that I chose to submit is more directly related to the woman’s role in Christian society.  The roles for women in the church are subordinate to those of men.  Today, we are living in a world that although disputed by women is still dominated by men. The apparent and widely displayed rebellion of women to counteract male chauvinism makes for a more difficult Christian walk.  The two pieces of artwork that are entitled “EVE 1” and “EVE 2” are reflections of the inner turmoil and pride of being a women walking by faith under the curse of Eve.

The medium that I chose is mixed. I incorporated all the things that I enjoy. Some of those things are nonrepresentational art, and the human figure.  These paintings are a collage of my own paintings and digital photographs.  The photographs give the artwork a sort of realism, although comprised with the nonrepresentational paintings give them an expressionistic quality. The paintings are constructed of layers of paintings, photographs, and photograph transfers, under oil paintings.  This laborious process makes for a wonderful effect.

Another art form that I enjoy is graffiti.  Although not recognized in the fine art world, it has birthed itself in my generation.  Graffiti’s roots are found in hip-hop. I am very in-touch with what is going on in the hip-hop world and I am fascinated with these artists that are willing to incorporate their beliefs into their music.  The look and feel of this artwork is directly linked to my generation and the music associated with it.
